Can a Nurse Practitioner Open a Medical Clinic?

The answer depends on the state and the structure
Nurse practitioners are essential healthcare providers, but practice authority and business ownership are not identical questions. State laws govern an NP’s clinical authority, while other laws may affect who can own a medical practice, how the entity is structured, and whether physician collaboration or supervision is required. A qualified healthcare attorney should review the proposed state and model.
Full, reduced, and restricted practice environments
The American Association of Nurse Practitioners groups states into full, reduced, and restricted practice environments. AANP reports that NPs have full practice authority in 27 states, the District of Columbia, and two U.S. territories. Requirements can change, so prospective owners should confirm current rules with the relevant licensing board and independent counsel.
Clinical independence does not remove business work
Even when an NP may practice with greater clinical autonomy, a clinic still needs a location plan, entity and contracts, equipment, insurance, staffing, scheduling, documentation, billing, privacy processes, vendors, marketing, accounting, and working capital. Many clinicians seek support because they want to focus more of their time on patient care.
Questions to answer early
Where will the clinic operate? What services will it provide? Which board regulates the clinician? Is a collaborating or supervising relationship required? What ownership structure is permitted? Which payers will be pursued? Who will manage billing and administration? How many months of operating capital are available?
